My Role
I could rattle off all of my self-appointed titles (including, but not limited to: managing editor, head producer, advocate for all, crisis mitigator, etc.), but what I feel was most important about this experience was the unique opportunity to lead a group of creatives and afford them the outlet to express themselves on campus.
As a leader, it was extremely important to me to make sure that every single person’s voice on the team was heard— even if that meant spending an hour on the phone with one of the fifty team members to explain our next project in great detail to ensure we were on the same page.
A meeting for the Rival meant there would be beer and we’d likely be congregating at someone’s apartment; the atmosphere was always akin to a group of friends hanging out, empowering and validating one another’s creative impulses. We made creating things cool. And so my job was more or less keeping the energy and incentive high for 2 full years, because I truly believed in it and knew that if I could keep the positivity and spirits high, it would have an infectious effect. And I think it did.
It’s the project I’m most proud of. And I made some amazing, lifelong friends in the process.
